Abstract

 Nowadays, the profession of architecture and the ways in which it is taught is constantly evolving, which requires the development of architectural design vocabulary and curricula as an urgent necessity. The importance of the study is due to highlighting the subject of the design idea as the essence and spirit of the architectural design process. The problem of the study lies in the fact that students face academic difficulties in understanding the role of the idea in the design process and its basic components, which are (Case study, Function, Form and Style or Orientation...etc.). Therefore, this paper aims to define the main concepts that enter into the formation of the design idea for any architectural project, whether in the educational stage or in practice, in addition to it reveals the ambiguity that baffles the designer when designing his initial idea. The methodology used is based on trying to monitor and document the basic determinants of building the design idea for students to ensure their understanding and ability to apply what they learn, took a small sample of them in drawing studios of the departments of architecture at Omar Al-Mukhtar University - Derna. The results obtained will enhance the knowledge of students and those interested, to build an integrated perception about the requirements for the quality of the design idea, its important stages, and the reasons for its success.
