Abstract
This study aimed to find out whether there are convincing motives for merging governmental commercial banks operating in Libya by surveying the views of government bank employees in Libya on the idea of banking merger. In order to achieve this purpose, a descriptive method of scientific research was adopted for this study. The field survey method used in descriptive research was also used for the purpose of collecting the primary data necessary for the study. A questionnaire was designed and distributed to a sample of government commercial banks operating in the city of Sirte consisting of (50) employees. As a result the study revealed several encouraging factors for merging government commercial banks in Libya.
Among them are the following: Weak financial resources, the cost of opening new branches, the desire for geographical expansion, low profits, low volume of deposits, and special local competition. Accordingly, the study recommended the need for the Libyan government banking authorities to encourage government commercial banks to merge in order to form strong economic entities capable of competing locally and internationally and benefiting from the well-known economic advantages of banking merger.
