The Crisis of Moral Values and the Reshaping of Deviant Behavior Patterns in Contemporary Society: A Sociological Perspective

Abstract

This study addresses the issue of the Moral Values Crisis and the Reshaping of Deviant Behavior Patterns in Contemporary Society: A Sociological Perspective, based on the importance of moral values in regulating individual and collective behavior and promoting social cohesion and stability. The study aims to identify the concept, manifestations, dimensions, and causes of the moral values crisis, analyze its implications for social behavior, and explore the relationship between the weakening of moral values and the emergence of new forms of deviant behavior amid rapid social, cultural, and technological transformations. The study adopts a sociological perspective to analyze the relationship between values and behavior, focusing on the role of socialization, social control, and social, cultural, and educational institutions in shaping and directing behavior. It also examines the transformations that have affected patterns of deviant behavior, particularly forms of deviance associated with the digital sphere, and the new forms of behavior that modern communication technologies have generated which are inconsistent with prevailing social and moral norms. The study concludes that the moral values crisis is associated with a range of social, cultural, and technological transformations, as well as changes in patterns of socialization and the weakening of some mechanisms of social control. The weakening of moral values and ethical standards may contribute to a decline in self-regulation, reduced commitment to social rules, and the emergence or spread of certain forms of deviant behavior. The study also demonstrates that deviant behavior is no longer confined to traditional forms; rather, it has been reshaped within the digital environment to include cyberbullying, defamation, privacy violations, the dissemination of rumors and misinformation, hate speech, and other emerging forms of deviant behavior. The study emphasizes that addressing the moral values crisis and reducing deviant behavior requires an integrated social approach based on rebuilding moral values, strengthening the role of the family in socialization, activating the roles of educational, cultural, and media institutions, strengthening mechanisms of social control, promoting digital literacy, and fostering the values of responsibility, citizenship, tolerance, and respect for others. It also stresses the importance of moving beyond a primary focus on punishment toward preventive and rehabilitative approaches that contribute to addressing the social and value-based causes of deviant behavior.
