The Problem of Context in the Transmission and Critique of Hadith and Its Impact on the Interpretation of Prophetic Narrations

Abstract

Considering context and tracking its impact in understanding the Prophetic Sunnah is a necessary requirement for reaching the true meanings of the words of the Prophet (peace be upon him). This can only be achieved by examining the contexts surrounding the texts of the Hadith, as the meanings of these texts become clear and evident only after revealing their contextual indications. These indications yield various interpretations that help understand the intended meaning of the Hadith. This scholarly article presents an analytical overview aimed at uncovering the issue of context in the narration and critique of Hadith. It highlights the role of linguistic, situational, and causal contexts in guiding the meaning of the noble Prophetic Hadith.
