Abstract

The factor theory is one of the theories that coincided with the emergence of Arabic grammar, and it is considered one of the most important pillars upon which grammar was built. However, what is noted about this theory is that it became the main concern of grammarians after its early ages. Later grammarians made this theory a sword hanging over linguistic styles. Every style that contradicted this theory, they tried to interpret it so that it would agree with this theory. If they were unable to interpret it, they described it as anomalous or rare, attributed it to poetic necessity, or rejected it. In this study, we will address the factor theory and its relationship to language, through some valid linguistic examples that contradicted the factor theory established by grammarians. We will also examine how grammarians dealt with these examples, and to what extent did they agree on this approach?
