Illegal immigration as an international phenomenon and its impact on relations between Libya and Italy 2011-2023

Abstract

Perhaps the political and security instability that Libya has witnessed after 2011 is the result of many factors that led to this situation. The situation has developed into a very complex internal conflict and internal division between the parties and leaders of the political scene in Libya, in addition to the international and regional conflict and competition with their interference in the Libyan crisis file. Here, we are not surprised that Italy is one of these countries that intervened in Libyan affairs after the change that Libya witnessed in the political system in 2011 , which made Italy the most interested European country in the Libyan file and gave itself many justifications for its intervention represented in security, economic and political reasons in addition to the geographical proximity and historical relations between Libya and Italy dating back to the era of Italian colonization of Libya . Perhaps the internal Libyan conflict that resulted after 2011 caused an increase in security and economic risks to Italy, which affected the political relations between them and pushed it to cancel a number of positions regarding its dealings with Libya, all within the framework of its common interests with Libya, as well as Italy’s relationship with the countries of the European Union, as it is An influential party in the Libyan situation, and also the direct impact of the European Union countries from the dangers of illegal immigration on their countries, all these moves in Italian foreign policy towards Libya have the primary goal of preserving Italian interests in Libya, which have been affected. One of the main reasons for Italy 's intervention in Libyan affairs is to put an end to the problem of illegal immigration towards the Italian coast.
