Abstract

This research aims to identify and examine the Qur’anic pauses (waqf) attributed to Imam Nāfiʿ al-Madanī as presented in the book Al-Muktafā fī al-Waqf wa al-Ibtidāʾ by Imam Abū ʿAmr al-Dānī. The study seeks to clarify Imam Nāfiʿ’s choices in the science of pause and resumption, along with the grammatical and exegetical justifications upon which these choices were based. It also investigates Imam al-Dānī’s methodology in presenting these pauses and how he with them—at times through interpretation and at other times through refutation—and explains the reasons al-Dānī gave for rejecting a number of these Nāfiʿ-related pauses.
