The Indo-Pakistani Conflict in Kashmir: Historical Roots and Ongoing Trajectories

Abstract

This study examines the historical and political roots of the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir region, focusing on the evolution of this conflict since 1947, the year that witnessed the partition of the Indian subcontinent and the birth of this complex dispute. The research offers a comprehensive academic analysis that reviews the structural factors that have contributed to the protracted nature of the conflict, including regional, identity-based, and religious considerations, as well as the profound differences in strategic visions between the two sides. The analysis also addresses the impact of the Kashmir conflict on bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, particularly concerning political tensions and the balance of military power, as well as the security repercussions resulting from the militarization of the region and the continued clashes across the Line of Control. The research further examines the diplomatic dimensions of the issue, noting the nature of the roles played by international powers and regional organizations in mediation efforts that have thus far failed to achieve tangible progress . This work employs a historical-analytical approach based on an in-depth review of a range of primary sources and contemporary academic studies, enabling a deeper understanding of the conflict's trajectories and complexities.
