Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the extent to which the accounting profession can keep pace with rapid developments in information technology tools and programmes, measure accountants' level of familiarity with these tools, and assess the extent to which they employ them in developing professional practices in Libyan banks in the eastern region. The study relied on a descriptive analytical approach, with the study population consisting of Libyan commercial banks whose headquarters are located in the eastern region. A random stratified sample of 88 individuals was selected from among employees in the accounting, internal audit, and information technology departments. To collect the data, a special questionnaire was designed and distributed in both traditional and electronic formats. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, through the use of a set of appropriate statistical methods, including arithmetic means and standard deviations, T-tests, and one-way ANOVA. The results of the study concluded that the accounting profession in the Libyan banks under study has a high capacity to keep pace with recent developments in information technology tools and programmes. The results also showed that accountants have a good level of knowledge of these tools and use them effectively in the development of the profession. In light of these results, the study recommended the need to strengthen specialised training and educational programmes in the field of information technology for accountants and activating partnerships between specialists in accounting and information technologyto build an integrated framework that supports the development of the accounting profession, in addition to increasing investments in information and communication technology infrastructure to ensure improved performance efficiency and sustainable professional development.
