Intransitive verbs and their transitivity through prepositions in Surah Ar-Rum

Abstract

The present study investigates the intransitive verbs in Surat al-Rum. It compiles all instances of intransitive verbs that are rendered transitive by means of prepositions, and analyzes the manner in which each verb selects its corresponding preposition. Furthermore, it surveys the range of prepositions with which each verb may co-occur in Arabic. The study is preceded by a theoretical framework that defines the intransitive verb, explains the mechanisms of transitivity, and outlines the grammatical principles used to identify intransitive verbs.
