Abstract

This research examines the markets of Al-Andalus, their emergence, the factors contributing to their development, and their impact on Andalusian society during the Emirate and Caliphate periods. It argues that markets served as a primary engine for economic, social, and urban growth in Al-Andalus, exploring this through four sections. The first section aims to trace the historical roots of the emergence of markets in Al-Andalus and review the stages of their early development under the Umayyad Emirate, which laid the foundations for administrative organization in the markets, and then during the Caliphate period, which witnessed significant maturity in market organization. The second section focuses on analyzing the economic and social factors that contributed to the development of the markets, the role of Andalusian merchants in forming trade links with the East and the Maghreb, in addition to presenting the characteristics of Andalusian markets and their transformation into active economic institutions. The third section focuses on the organization of markets through the Hisbah apparatus, its head, the market supervisor (Ṣāḥib al-Sūq), and the laws and regulations emanating from it, and their role in regulating the markets in an integrated manner. It also sheds light on the close relationship between religious and political authority in this context, as the laws were derived from Maliki jurisprudence and applied in close cooperation between the Muhtasib (market inspector) and the Qadi (judge), indicating the unity of judicial and executive authority in achieving stability and justice within the markets. The fourth section analyzes the impact of the markets on economic and social life in Andalusian.
