Abstract

Religious zawiyas (Islamic lodges) in Libya are considered among the most significant social and cultural institutions that have played a pivotal role in the life of Libyan society throughout history. They emerged within a historical context characterized by the spread of Sufi orders and the need for institutions that combined religious, educational, and social functions. Over time, their roles expanded to include religious education, the dissemination of Islamic culture, and social support for the poor and travelers, while also reinforcing values of solidarity and cohesion. Zawiyas further served as centers of national resistance against colonial powers, safeguarding both religious and national identity. The Zawiya of Muftah al-Himali stands as a prominent example of such institutions in Libya, as it successfully combined the teaching of Islamic sciences with the provision of social and cultural services, leaving a lasting impact on the local community.
