Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Its Relationship to Neurotic Perfectionism A Theoretical Study
Main Article Content
Abstract
The current study aimed to identify the relationship between obsessive-compulsive perfectionism and obsessive-compulsive disorder and to reveal the nature of this relationship in light of certain psychological and social variables while examining the implications of this relationship on the individual and society. The study was based on the fundamental assumption that neurotic perfectionism is one of the important psychological factors that contribute to the emergence and exacerbation of OCD symptoms, especially when it interacts with life stresses and stressful social eventsÆ
The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, analysing a set of previous studies that addressed obsessive perfectionism and OCD, either directly or indirectly, to identify general trends in the results and interpret them in light of the current research questions. The results of these studies showed a positive and statistically significant correlation between perfectionism and OCD symptoms, with excessive pursuit of perfection, fear of making mistakes, and constant doubt contributing to the reinforcement of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behavioursÆ
The results also revealed that life stressors and changing social events play an important role in increasing the severity of OCD symptoms, especially in individuals with high levels of neurotic perfectionism, which negatively affects psychological and social adjustment and quality of life. Some studies have pointed to gender differences in levels of neurotic perfectionism and OCD. In contrast, other studies have not confirmed these differences, reflecting the influence of cultural context and sample characteristics.
In light of the above, the study emphasised the importance of addressing neurotic perfectionism as a preventive and therapeutic approach to reducing OCD symptoms, and the need to develop guidance and treatment programs that contribute to improving individuals' mental health and reducing negative effects on society.
