Semantic Multiplicity of the Form "Fa'eel" in Surahs Maryam and Al-Shu'ara: A Morpho-Semantic Study
Main Article Content
Abstract
The semantic multiplicity of the form (fa‘īl) in the Holy Qur’an refers to
instances where Qur’anic commentators have pointed out that the
morphological form (fa‘īl) appears in the Qur’anic text in place of, or with
the meaning of, another form—such as (fā‘il) or (maf‘ūl). This has been
explicitly mentioned by exegetes in their interpretations of verses containing
the form (fa‘īl) in the Qur’an .
This research examines the phenomenon of semantic multiplicity and its
implications. Semantic multiplicity refers to a single word that conveys two
or more meanings, whether these meanings are different or closely related,
regardless of the cause—be it rhetorical, morphological, or otherwise .
The topic of semantic multiplicity is one of the most significant areas of
study in linguistics, particularly within the field of semantics. The study of
morphological patterns is of great importance, as it reveals differences in
strength, nuance, and meaning between forms. Every pattern that follows
the form (fa‘īl) carries an intensified meaning; it conveys strength, intensity,
and exaggeration in description. Hence, this form tends to have a more
powerful rhythm and a stronger expressive impact.
