Social and Psychological Factors Associated with Substance Abuse among Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
Substance abuse is considered a complex social and psychological phenomenon that poses serious risks to individuals and society, particularly among students. This study aims to analyze the social and psychological factors associated with substance abuse among students through a comprehensive review of relevant Arabic and international literature. The research focuses on social factors such as family support, peer influence, social relationships, and the university environment, alongside psychological factors including stress, anxiety, depression, and poor psychological adjustment. A descriptive-analytical literature-based approach was adopted by reviewing and comparing findings from previous studies. The results indicate that insufficient social support and high psychological stress are among the most significant factors contributing to substance abuse among students, and that the interaction between social and psychological factors plays a crucial role in shaping addictive behavior. The study provides analytical insights that support preventive and intervention strategies aimed at reducing substance abuse in university settings.
