Main Article Content
Abstract
Dr. Fadel al-Samarrai surpassed grammar books with his books on rhetoric; His book Ma'ani al-Nahw (The Meanings of Grammar) was the pinnacle of his works, distinguished by its precise grammatical analysis, rhetorical touches that shone in the history of grammar, which is full of famous figures and works, and its extrapolation from the texts of the two revelations, the Qur'an and the Sunnah, as well as the collections of poets, books of literature, and the heritage of grammarians and Arabic scholars. This fulfils the requirements of practical work in distinguishing the meanings of sentences that are similar in structure, with the author's efforts divided between the science of grammar and the science of rhetoric, so that there is cooperation and support between them in the service of the language of the Holy Qur'an, because the purpose of grammar is to clarify the speaker's meaning in the clearest possible way to the listener. For this reason, this book includes an introduction in which the author provides a concise logical justification for writing the book, supported by historical evidence. He then elaborates on his argument in the chapters, combining analysis and deduction. Through this detailed elaboration of the topics covered in the chapters, he emphasises the rich expressive power of the Arabic language. The book is truly a valuable resource for students of the various grammatical structures and their multiple meanings, and for the astute writer. and the skilful writer is the one who can exploit all these differences and their productive expressive potential to distinguish the quality of one literary work from another in terms of wording and meaning. I have no doubt that this noble language is unmatched by any other human language in these qualities and details.
