Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of code-switching on students’ engagement and comprehension in English language classrooms at the English Department, Faculty of Education, Misrata University. A mixed- methods research design with a dominant quantitative approach was employed. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 48 undergraduate students of English across different academic levels at the faculty of education, Misurata University. The findings reveal that students generally hold positive attitudes toward the use of code-switching, particularly for clarifying difficult vocabulary, grammar, and classroom instructions. The study concludes that strategic use of code- switching can support engagement and comprehension, while excessive use should be avoided, especially in advanced-level classes.
