Abstract

The current paper investigated the poem "Mabi Marad Ghair Dar Al-Aqeela( My only Illnessis the Camp of Al-Aqeela( by the poet Rajab Buhwaish. The poem was composed during Buhwaish's internment in the Al-Aqeela detention camp, established by the Italian occupiers during their rule over Libya. It vividly portrays the harsh torture endured by the detainees. It is considered a testament to the role of popular poetry and the vernacular dialect in accompanying the Libyan resistance against the invaders. Also, it is renowned for its powerful and eloquent expression of the struggles faced during that time. The aim of this paper was to uncover the characteristics of the dialect in Eastern Libya )Barqa(, understand the changes and developments the dialect underwent under Italian occupation, connect the dialect to the classical Arabic language, revert colloquial terms to their classical roots, and link contemporary speakers to their predecessors. It also examined how the dialect depicted the genocide endured by our people in a strong language with robust expressions. The general meaning of the verses was revealed, followed by a study of the vocabulary and their origins in linguistic dictionaries. The purpose of explaining the vocabulary is to elevate the classical Arabic language, study it in the context of actual linguistic use, and understand how the poet employed the dialect to express his suffering and pains in the detention camp while elucidating the .linguistic origins of the words in the poem
