The Hadith Studies of Ibn Yunus al-Siqilli (d. 451 AH) in Al-Jami’ for the Issues of Al-Mudawwana

Abstract

This research examines the hadith methodology of Ibn Yunus through his book, Al-Jami' li-Masa'il al-Mudawwana. It aims to introduce Ibn Yunus and his hadith methodology by analyzing his discussions of narrators (both praise and criticism), his explanation of hadith defects, his authentication and weakening of reports, his approach to explaining the status of the Sunnah and its use as evidence, and his method of attributing hadiths to their sources. The research problem lies in answering the following questions: What is Ibn Yunus's position in the field of hadith methodology? What methodology did he employ in discussing chains of transmission (isnad) and texts (matn)? The researcher used an integrated methodology that includes induction, analysis, description, and critique. The research concluded that Ibn Yunus possessed extensive knowledge of hadith sources, as evidenced by the diverse hadith sources he utilized in his compilation. Furthermore, the compilation of issues in the Mudawwana is considered a scholarly encyclopedia encompassing numerous disciplines, with hadith studies occupying a significant portion. His attention to the jurisprudence of hadith is also apparent in his explanation of its obscure terms, the derivation of legal rulings from it, and the elucidation of related legal principles.
