The Role of Context in Guiding the Parsing of the Preoccupied Element - A Syntactic and Semantic Study of Models from the Verses of the Holy Quran

Abstract

The chapter on 'preoccupation' (or 'preoccupation') is a subtle chapter in Arabic grammar, combining syntactic and semantic aspects simultaneously. It concerns the relationship between a preceding noun and a verb (or its equivalent) with a pronoun referring back to it. This chapter does not stop at mere grammatical analysis but extends to revealing the semantic secrets achieved by this construction within the context. This study aims to demonstrate how context guides the choice of grammatical analysis for the preoccupied element, and how deviating from the original syntactic structure produces a specific semantic effect, particularly in the Quranic text, which is a fertile ground for such studies. To achieve the research objectives, the descriptive-analytical method was employed, analyzing Quranic verses in which this construction appears, highlighting how the context contributes to favoring one grammatical interpretation over another. The research concludes that context plays a significant role in guiding the intended meaning of the construction, resolving ambiguity between different grammatical interpretations, and revealing the semantic relationships between the elements of the sentence.
