Abstract

This study examines the role of Libyan national leaders in achieving Libya's independence during the period 1949–1951. It focuses on the political and diplomatic efforts that contributed to defeating the trusteeship and partition plans proposed by colonial powers after World War II. The research analyzes the consequences of the failure of the Bevin-Sforza Plan and highlights the activities of Libyan political parties and national delegations in defending Libya's right to self-determination before the United Nations. The study also sheds light on the efforts of Emir Idris Al-Senussi, Bashir Al-Saadawi, and other national figures in unifying the Libyan position and presenting the demands for unity and independence to the international community. These efforts culminated in the adoption of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 289 on 21 November 1949, which affirmed Libya's independence, unity, and sovereignty no later than 1 January 1952. The research concludes that the success of the Libyan national movement in maintaining unity and overcoming political divisions played a decisive role in securing international recognition of Libya's right to independence, ultimately paving the way for the declaration of the United Kingdom of Libya on 24 December 1951.
