Ibn Yunus al-Siqilli - A Reading in Its Historical and Cultural Context - During the 5th Hijri / 11th Gregorian Century

Abstract

This study aims to examine the historical and cultural context surrounding the emergence of the Maliki jurist Ibn Yunus al-Siqilli, as well as the trajectory of his scholarly formation between Sicily and Ifriqiya during the fifth century AH (eleventh century CE). The analysis is situated within the broader political and intellectual transformations that characterized the Islamic West. The study begins by analyzing the impact of the Muslim conquest of Sicily on the consolidation of the Maliki school and the formation of its early scholarly foundations. It then traces the manifestations of Maliki influence in the island’s juristic and cultural life, through the mobility of scholars, the transmission of texts, and the development of a dynamic intellectual environment. Furthermore, the study highlights the role of Kairouan as a major center of learning in shaping Ibn Yunus’s intellectual formation, prior to the decline of its scholarly prominence as a result of political upheavals associated with the Banu Hilal invasion of Ifriqiya. This decline led to the migration of scholars toward coastal cities, most notably Mahdia. Methodologically, the study adopts a historical-analytical approach, drawing on biographical dictionaries alongside juristic and historical sources, with the aim of uncovering the nature of the relationship between political and intellectual transformations. It also seeks to situate Ibn Yunus al-Siqilli within the Maliki scholarly tradition. The study concludes that Ibn Yunus’s scholarly trajectory represents a model reflecting patterns of scholarly mobility in the Islamic West, and that the Sicilian school functioned as an extension of the Kairouanese tradition. Despite the disruptions caused by the fall of Kairouan to the Banu Hilal and subsequently the Norman conquest of Sicily, this school contributed to the preservation and development of the Maliki doctrine, ultimately reshaping the intellectual map of the region.
