Interpretation of the Verses of creed between al-Tabari (d. 310 AH) and al-Tabrisi (d. 548 AH): A Comparative Study

Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of doctrinal verses in the Qur’an through a comparative analysis between Al-Tabari and Al-Tabarsi. It aims to highlight the methodological approaches adopted by both scholars in explaining verses related to Islamic creed, including issues of divine attributes, prophethood, and the unseen. The research explores the similarities and differences in their exegetical methods, focusing on their use of linguistic analysis, transmitted reports, and rational interpretation. While Al-Tabari is known for his reliance on narrations and early authorities, Al-Tabarsi combines traditional reports with theological reasoning influenced by his doctrinal background. The study concludes that, despite their differing theological orientations, both scholars contributed significantly to the development of Qur’anic exegesis. Their works reflect a rich intellectual tradition that integrates textual interpretation with doctrinal understanding, offering valuable insights into the diversity of Islamic thought.
