Rhetorical Phenomena in the Nomenclature of Grammatical Terms (Selected Models)

Abstract

This study aims to highlight the rhetorical phenomena in the naming of certain grammatical terms among grammarians across different eras and schools of thought, employing a descriptive approach. It has reached several key findings, most notably: that grammarians were meticulous in selecting terms that express the core meanings of grammatical concepts. Metaphor (Majaz), ellipsis (Hadhaf), and connection (Isal) are considered the most prominent emergent phenomena in their nomenclature. To ensure that these changes do not conflict with the foundational principles of their terminology, they justified instances of metaphor by asserting that the naming is conventional (istilahiyyah).
