The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Enhancing Reference in University Libraries
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the role of artificial in developing reference services in Libyan university libraries, focusing on its impact on improving the efficiency and quality of services provided to users. The study stems from the digital transformations occurring in the information sector and employs a descriptive-analytical approach. A questionnaire was administered intelligence (AI) to a sample of 30 participants from Libyan university library staff. The questionnaire comprised three main sections: participants' background information, the use of AI in libraries, and the impact of AI on the efficiency and quality of reference services. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods such as percentages and frequencies, in addition to qualitative content analysis of responses. The results showed that the majority of participants (over 60%) possessed a good understanding of AI concepts and their application in libraries. They also confirmed that these technologies improve the accuracy of search results, speed of information access, and service quality. However, the results indicated the existence of technical and human challenges, most notably the need for continuous staff training and the lack of technical resources in some libraries. The study concluded with a set of recommendations, including the necessity of enhancing professional development for staff, expanding AI applications in reference and administrative processes, and adopting strategic performance evaluation plans. It contributes to building smart university libraries capable of keeping pace with technological development and meeting the needs of users with greater efficiency.
