The Role of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Enabling Higher Education to Respond to Contemporary Transformations

Abstract

The third millennium has witnessed profound and accelerating transformations at the economic, social, political, and technological levels, imposing unprecedented challenges on higher education institutions. These challenges go beyond the traditional role of universities as centers for knowledge transmission, requiring them instead to play an active role in shaping individuals capable of adaptation, critical thinking, and conscious participation in their societies. Within this context, the humanities and social sciences emerge as a fundamental pillar in building human awareness, reinforcing values, and understanding the dynamics of society and its transformations. This study is grounded in the premise that higher education cannot effectively respond to contemporary transformations by relying solely on technological advancement, regardless of its rapid pace, unless it is supported by an integrated humanistic and social vision that places the human being at the center of the educational process. University education, in the context of digital transformation and the expanding use of artificial intelligence, faces critical issues related to identity, meaning, ethics, and human relationships within learning and research environments—issues that cannot be addressed in isolation from the contributions of the humanities and social sciences. The study discusses the role of these disciplines in enabling universities to prepare generations capable of engaging with a rapidly changing world through the development of critical thinking skills, social awareness, ethical responsibility, and the ability to make informed decisions in complex contexts. It also addresses the importance of cognitive integration between humanistic and applied disciplines in guiding scientific research toward the most pressing human and societal issues, thereby supporting sustainable development pathways, promoting justice, and reinforcing human peace. Furthermore, the study highlights scientific innovation and its role in shaping the future, with particular emphasis on applications of artificial intelligence and digital transformation in higher education and knowledge production, while analyzing the ethical implications associated with emerging technologies in learning and research environments. It emphasizes that the absence of a human-centered perspective in the employment of these technologies may lead to an imbalance between scientific progress and human psychological and social needs, necessitating a reconsideration of educational and research policies within universities. The study concludes that empowering higher education to fulfill its future role requires restoring the centrality of the humanities and social sciences—not as supportive fields of knowledge, but as core components in shaping human beings and building society, and in ensuring that scientific innovation serves humanity rather than operates at its expense.
