The Impact of Social Media on Academic Achievement: An Analytical Sociological Study in Libyan Society

Abstract

Human societies are going through a stage of radical transformation due to the massive flow of information caused by modern communication means. These tools are no longer just for entertainment; they have become a vital medium shaping the details of daily life. High school girls stand out as the group most affected by this transformation because they are at a critical age marked by psychological and social flexibility, making them directly influenced by all the values and trends emerging from the digital space. The impact of communication tools has a dual dimension. Academically, these tools have provided educational platforms and limitless knowledge resources that help enhance self-learning; however, on the other hand, they can also lead to distraction and a decline in academic achievement due to excessive use. Socially, these tools have redefined the concept of 'relationships.' While they enable broad social interaction, they can also weaken direct family bonds and replace real-life experiences with a virtual reality that may not always align with social norms and prevailing values.
