Lexical Definition Patterns of Scientific Terms in Taj Al-‘Arus

Abstract

This study investigates the patterns of lexicographical definition used for scientific terms in Tāj al-ʿArūs by al-Zabīdī, with the aim of identifying their methodological features and their role in clarifying scientific concepts. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, supported by inductive collection and analysis of selected scientific terms. The findings reveal that al-Zabīdī employed a variety of definitional patterns, including synonym-based, logical, functional, encyclopedic, and corrective definitions, according to the nature of each term. This diversity reflects his lexicographical and terminological awareness and demonstrates that Tāj al-ʿArūs goes beyond explaining lexical meanings to documenting and constructing specialized scientific concepts, highlighting its significance in both Arabic lexicography and terminology studies.
