Abstract
The present study aimed to identify the psychological and social problems experienced by heads of academic departments at the Faculty of Education, University of Misrata. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher administered a questionnaire specifically developed for the purposes of the present study. After establishing the validity and reliability of the instrument, it was administered to the entire study population, which consisted of 18 heads of academic departments. Several statistical methods were employed to analyze and interpret the data, including means, standard deviations, percentages, and the t-test for differences. The study yielded several findings. First, there were variations in the prevalence of psychological and social problems among heads of academic departments, with psychological problems ranking first, followed by social problems. Second, there were no statistically significant differences between male and female heads of academic departments in the level of psychological and social problems. Third, there were no statistically significant differences between heads of departments in the humanities and those in applied sciences with regard to psychological and social problems. In light of these findings, the researcher recommends organizing training programs, workshops, and professional development courses for heads of academic departments in the field of academic and administrative management. The researcher also recommends motivating and recognizing the efforts of heads of academic departments through both material and moral incentives, as well as providing them with appropriate professional support. Furthermore, the researcher proposes conducting a comparative study of psychological and social problems among heads of academic departments across different faculties at the University of Misrata. Another proposed study is to investigate the relationship between psychological and social problems and job satisfaction among heads of academic departments.
