Assessment of Vegetation Cover in Wadi Al-Tannin Basin Using Field Survey and the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI)

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the vegetation cover in Wadi Al-Tannin Basin by integrating field surveys with the Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI). The study was based on seven sampling plots, each measuring 20 × 20 m, in which plant species were identified and vegetation density and cover were assessed. SAVI data were also used to compare vegetation conditions between 2020 and 2024 in order to monitor temporal changes in vegetation cover. The field survey results showed that Plot 6 recorded the highest vegetation density, whereas Plot 2 exhibited the lowest density. In terms of vegetation cover, Plot 6 had the highest percentage of vegetation cover, while Plot 7 recorded the lowest. A total of 14 plant species were identified within the study area, with Urginea maritima and Asphodelus microcarpus being the most abundant species. The SAVI analysis revealed relative stability in the areas of moderate and sparse vegetation cover between 2020 and 2024, whereas the dense vegetation category showed a noticeable increase in 2024, indicating a limited improvement in vegetation density in some parts of the basin. The findings highlight the importance of integrating field surveys with remote sensing techniques for assessing vegetation cover and monitoring its spatial and temporal dynamics. Such an integrated approach provides valuable information to support natural resource management and the development of effective conservation strategies for the ecosystems of Wadi Al-Tannin Basin.
