Abstract

This research examines the phenomena of substitution and ellipsis as key mechanisms for achieving textual cohesion in the poetry of Abū Dhū'ayb al-Hudhalī, within the framework of text linguistics. The study aims to reveal how the poet employs these linguistic phenomena in constructing his poetic text and achieving coherence and harmony among its parts. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach, tracing the occurrences of substitution and ellipsis in Abū Dhū'ayb's poetry and classifying them according to the types identified by text linguistics scholars such as Halliday and Hasan, and De Beaugrande, among others. The findings revealed that ellipsis is more prevalent in Abū Dhū'ayb's poetry than substitution. Ellipsis took various forms: nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and ellipsis of clause-like structures. Substitution also varied among nominal, verbal, and clausal substitution. Both phenomena contributed to textual cohesion by referring the recipient to preceding and following contexts, enriching the text with deep semantic implications, avoiding tedious repetition, and achieving rhetorical brevity. The research concluded that ellipsis and substitution in Abū Dhū'ayb's poetry were not arbitrary; rather, they carried profound semantic and aesthetic dimensions, reflecting the poet's linguistic competence and his deep sensitivity to the art of poetic expression.
