Abstract

This research examines the relationship between theme and narration in the novel “Screaming in the Basement” by Fatima Al-Hajji, which is a contemporary Arab novel that received great attention for its innovative narrative style and its examination of complex social and political issues. Through linguistic and terminological analysis, the research demonstrates the clear relationship between text and discourse and their reflection on the theme in the aforementioned novel, and highlights the ways in which the theme is woven throughout the narrative. The novel's exploration of identity and belonging in a society marked by oppression and suffering serves as a powerful and critical commentary on contemporary social and political issues, including the experiences of women in Libyan society in different eras. The narrator's narrative style is one of her strongest points, as it blends realism and magical (romantic) realism, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences and biases, challenging prevailing narratives and offering new perspectives on complex social issues. The research follows the approach of linguistic and terminological analysis of the novel, and examines the ways in which theme and narrative are intertwined throughout the text. The research also relies on literary theory and critical approaches to analyze the novel's use of magical realism and its depiction of female agency and resistance. The researcher concluded that the novel's use of different narrative methods, such as non-linear (overlapping) storytelling, preceding narrative, and subsequent narrative, adds complexity and depth to the exploration of the theme, which It creates a sense of mystery that reflects the complexities of the human experience. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of the importance of the novel and its connection to literary discussions surrounding theme and narrative. Specifically, it explores how the novel's use of magical realism serves as a powerful tool to challenge dominant narratives and offer new perspectives on complex Arab social issues. The study also examines how the novel's depiction of feminine strength challenges and resists dominant narratives about women's roles in society.
