The Role of Civil Society in Shaping Social Transformation in Libyan Society

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the role of civil society in fostering social transformation by analyzing the contribution of civil society organizations (CSOs) in supporting transformation within the Libyan society, particularly in the transitional and post-conflict context. It also sought to assess the extent to which these organizations are aware of their societal mission and to examine the nature of the programs and activities they implement to achieve social change. Furthermore, the study addressed the structural, political, and social factors that hinder the effectiveness of civil society in achieving genuine and sustainable social transformation in Libya. Additionally, it aimed to investigate the extent to which CSOs contribute to promoting the values of citizenship, social justice, and equality among different societal groups. The study adopted the descriptive method due to its relevance to the research objectives and analytical requirements. The study reached the following findings: -Civil society organizations in Libya play a pivotal role in supporting social transformation by promoting community participation, national reconciliation, and the empowerment of vulnerable groups in the transitional and post-conflict context. -Libyan CSOs demonstrate growing awareness of the importance of their social mission and implement diverse programs and activities focusing on awareness-raising, empowerment, and peacebuilding to foster social change. -The effectiveness of civil society in Libya is hindered by structural factors such as weak institutional frameworks, political factors such as instability and division, and social factors such as a lack of public trust and the prevalence of narrow loyalties, all of which limit its ability to drive genuine and sustainable social transformation. -CSOs contribute effectively to promoting the values of citizenship, social justice, and equality among different social groups through awareness programs, empowerment initiatives, and advocacy for human rights and public participation.
