Abdulsalam Al-Bosairi and His Role in Libyan Foreign Policy During the Monarchical Era (1951–1969)

Abstract

This study examines the role of Abd al-Salam al-Busiri in Libyan foreign policy during the monarchical era (1951–1969). It traces his political and diplomatic career and analyzes his contributions to the management of the foreign relations of the newly independent Libyan state. The study adopts a historical-analytical approach based on historical documents and relevant scholarly sources to explore the responsibilities he assumed within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Libya’s diplomatic missions abroad. The study highlights his role in supporting Libya’s sovereign decision-making process, participating in international negotiations concerning foreign military bases, and strengthening Libya’s relations with Arab and Western countries. It also examines his efforts in representing Libya in regional and international forums, as well as the impact of his legal background and administrative experience on the conduct of diplomatic affairs during the state-building period. The study concludes that Abd al-Salam al-Busiri was among the prominent diplomatic figures who contributed significantly to shaping Libyan foreign policy during the monarchical period and to enhancing Libya’s international standing during the early decades of independence.
